GC Index Insights: Making the Invisible Visible

By Mark Griffin

In celebration of Mark and Neil receiving their Master GCOlogist certifications in October, we’re sharing an article from the CEO of The GC Index about the power of this unique assessment tool in making the invisible visible. PurposeFused has written extensively about The GC Index and integrated it into the majority of their individual, team, and broader collaborative engagements.

Then, read Nathan’s synopsis below about the impact of uncovering otherwise invisible data on team energy and how it can help them work together more effectively.

An article by Nathan Ott, CEO of The GC Index:

“This week, I wanted to share a statement from Master GCOlogist Mark Griffin MBE, made while we were delivering a workshop together last week. Mark said, “The true power of The GC Index is that it makes the invisible visible.”

This, of course, resonated with me deeply because, historically, we have valued (and judged!) people for what they do, not what they intend. The GC Index brings us closer to people’s hidden intentions and helps us understand why we often feel misunderstood by others.

Let’s consider a common phrase we might use about someone: “Oh, they are being critical, close-minded, and difficult.” This phrase isn’t helpful to anyone and is steeped in personality assumptions.

With The GC Index, we can start to understand where those “critical, close-minded” behaviors are coming from. Is it from a Strategist’s drive for clarity? A Polisher’s drive for improvement? An Implementer’s drive to get results quickly?

The GC Index brings us closer to the root cause of others’ intentions at work and enables teams to “storm” and “norm” much quicker by bringing these work-focused intentions to the surface.

Mark Griffin MBE encapsulated The GC Index perfectly when he stated that it “makes the invisible visible.” This phrase embodies our mission—providing teams with a clearer understanding of the hidden dynamics that shape their success. Often, we sense underlying issues within a team but struggle to articulate or measure them. The GC Index reveals these unseen energies and translates them into actionable insights.

Consider a team characterized by strong Polisher, Game Changer, and Play Maker profiles. They are creative, detail-oriented, and collaborative, brimming with ideas, yet they struggle to meet targets or bring their products to market.

At first glance, their GC Index Team profile reveals they lack robust Strategist and Implementer energies, explaining their challenges with strategic planning and execution. This realization is transformative—the team can swiftly adjust their approach, realizing that their missing element isn’t talent (they are a successful team!) but rather the specific energy needed to achieve their goals. The invisible becomes visible.

By way of another example, take a team with high Implementer, Polisher, and Strategist energies. While they excel in consistent, structured work, they often struggle to adapt to market changes or create new possibilities for future growth. They feel frustrated by demands from the Board to take advantage of new technology adopted by competitors.

Their GC Index profile reveals a gap in Game Changer and Play Maker energies. Understanding this dynamic brings relief and direction—the team no longer has the monthly circular debate around why innovation or collaboration is challenging for them. They now have a visible framework to strategically address these areas by bringing in more Game Changer energy from across the wider organization. The invisible becomes visible.

The GC Index transforms vague awareness into actionable insight, allowing teams to clearly and objectively identify their strengths and gaps. With this framework, teams can bypass months of trial and error, quickly building an effective, engaged, and productive environment. Leaders and team members align more swiftly, reducing potential conflict and paving the way for enhanced productivity and synergy.

The GC Index is revolutionizing organizational dynamics by making the unseen visible. It offers a language and framework to understand natural energies in a measurable and actionable way, enabling teams to harness the best from each member.

As teams become empowered to appreciate each other’s contributions and align their efforts, they transition from good intentions to meaningful, measurable results.

Let’s keep helping teams unlock their true potential.

Do good. Be great.
